Chapter 12

Minutes later, at Vinnie’s front door, Ally’s stomach churned. As determined as she was to find out more information about Vinnie and why Becca didn’t offer information about him, she knew she had to tread carefully. If Becca wasn’t the murderer, she had certainly lost someone she loved.

Charlotte met Ally’s eyes and nodded.

Ally took a deep breath, then knocked on the door.

The door swung open. Becca stared out at the two of them, then frowned as she gestured for them to step inside.

“I guess you didn’t bring candy and flowers this time?”

“Not this time.” Ally shook her head. “I will drop some candies off later if you want. We were hoping to talk to you about Vinnie.”

“Of course you were. That’s all anyone wants to talk about.” Becca sank down onto the couch in the living room, where Cliff already sat.

“Cliff, it’s good to see you again.” Charlotte met his eyes.

“He’s been here to support me through all of this.” Becca sniffled.

“That’s very good of you.” Charlotte smiled at Cliff.

Ally nodded to him, then cleared her throat.

“I think you know that Vinnie wasn’t as innocent as he claimed to be. He was hiding something, wasn’t he, Becca?” She settled into the chair across from the couch, and focused her attention on her.

“What?” Becca stared at her.

“Vinnie, he had secrets.” Ally raised an eyebrow. “I think they might be what got him killed. You haven’t been very helpful with information about Vinnie, but that isn’t because you don’t want to help, is it? It’s because, you don’t have any information to help.”

Cliff shifted on the couch beside her. “Just tell her, Becca.”

“I don’t have anything to say.” Becca crossed her arms. “At least not to the police. They have nothing but questions, no answers. All I need to know is what happened to my Vinnie, instead of telling me that, they keep asking me about his past.”

“That’s because he doesn’t have one.” Charlotte watched Cliff for a moment, then looked over at Becca. “People without pasts, usually have a lot of secrets. Don’t you think?”

“He was a good guy!” Becca sniffled.

“Here you are.” Cliff picked up a box of tissues from the coffee table and handed it to her. “Look, you’re upsetting her.” He shot a frown toward Ally. “Why are you even here?”

“I don’t want to upset her. As you know, I was supposed to get married at that farm.” Ally clasped her hands together. “I guess, I just want to know what happened. I want to help find out the truth. I know it won’t bring him back, but it will at least give you some answers.”

“That’s all I’m asking for.” Becca nodded as she wiped at her eyes with the tissue. “Sometimes I get distracted, and I forget for a minute, and then it hits me, that Vinnie is gone.” She took a sharp breath. “I just can’t believe this happened to me, to us.”

“You need to tell them.” Cliff frowned. “They are going to find out eventually.
